The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s neonatology program at Holtz Children’s Hospital is one of the largest, most well-regarded, and longest established Level III neonatal units in the United States. As the only academic neonatal program in South Florida, our goal is to achieve excellence in all areas of academic endeavor, which encompass patient care, research and medical education.
In addition to the full-time board – certified neonatologists, our care team includes nursing staff, respiratory therapists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, and the families of our neonates. Our NICU believes in Family-Centered Care and thus, a wide array of services for families are provided.
The Project: Newborn Neonatal Special Care Center at Holtz was established in the 1970's and was re-designed in 2007 to provide state-of the art care to our neonates. As one of the largest NICUs in Country, the unit consists of 126 beds, 66 of which are ICU stations. In addition to providing innovative comprehensive and multidisciplinary medical care, the services delivered in the Newborn Special Care Center at Holtz are based on a family-centered philosophy. Several features of the Newborn Special Care Center serve to ensure an environment where optimal clinical care is combined with family involvement and with internationally recognized clinical research and training. As a university based program, our neonatal team, have had extensive involvement in NIH-funded multicenter clinical trials. As a result of clinical research conducted by our neonatologists and the level of care our team is able to offer, our outcomes are among the best in the nation.
